Darren,

Is the W2k machine part of the Samba domain (you have created a machine
account on Samba for the W2k machine)?  IIRC (at least, NT works this way),
W2k will not attempt a domain login unless it is part of a domain (rather
than a workgroup).

Remember that the Samba documentation contains the O'Reilly Samba book,
which might provide additional hints...
