[cross-posted to VM/VSE listservs]

It is ironic that the stability of the mainframe platform has led to the demise of so
many mainframe positions. Back when I started as a VM/VSE systems programmer in 1978,
and on through the 1980s, the amount of effort required to do anything (including a
good amount of assembler coding) did require a bunch more time, and therefore staff.

I know you all know this, so here's my point: Whereas Sytek used to do a LOT of
training on VM from 1986-1996, we've done practically none for the last six years. We
are now seeing a resurgence in requests for VM training, due (no doubt) to Linux'
popularity. So maybe there is hope after all -- Linux admins tend to be younger and we
may see more cross-training of Linux pros to the VM and other operating systems. Long
live the mainframe!

P.S. Don't forget about our own attempt to educate and elevate VM/Linux conciousness!
We have very informational, low-commercial, seminars scheduled in seven different
cities over the next two weeks; if you want to register, go to www.sytek-services.com
