I'm pretty sure the "fear of retribution" was not about "Arrr, matey! I'm a *PIRATE* on the High Seas Of IBM Licensed Program Products! Arrr!" but about having an actual hardware S/390 that you can play with, and if you crash it, it's not like Big Guys From the Raised Floor are going to come and kneecap you. It's *really yours to play with*. This is not something that most of us get to do with S/390s, most of the time. Usually someone *will* get upset if you have to POR the box unexpectedly. Sure, Hercules gives you the same thing, but somehow it's less fun to have exclusive control over a machine that only exists in software. Which I think was the author's point.
