Well, I know what you do different from me ;-)

You're in the /usr/src/linux-2.4.7 directory, and the patch refers to
files called linux-2.4.7/Documentation...  so there is overlap in the
path. If the two linux-2.4.7* directories are equal you can go down
one directory and patch from there, but in most cases you will find
that the person who ran diff was using some other directory name that
does not match yours.

So this is where the -p1 comes in, which means one qualifier is stripped
off the filename as it occurs in the patch.
