It is always dangerous to advocate editors, there are too many religious issues involved. Not that this is going to stop me ;-) If you are a developer then try (X)emacs. It supports all the languages that SlickEdit does and more, you can run compilations and debuggers inside it and read mail and news. It just disappoints me that our sysadmin won't put it in /etc/shells.
