Dave, I'm a little suspicious of the "lpam" name. Was the error message actually referencing "-lpam" ? If so, that would be just the PAM package. I'm not sure what version of SuSE you're on, but the original 7.0 has pam-0.72-160.s390.rpm which contains /usr/lib/libpam.so. That should have satisfied the configure script. The SLES7 packages have PAM broken down into pam, pam-devel, and pam_devperm. I would think that libpam.so would still be in the pam package, but perhaps in pam-devel.
