Buy one on the used market, or lease one for a month. Used 3174-11Ls are
going for about $300 and a 3278-2 should cost no more than $100 these
days -- the ESCON attached versions shouldn't be much more expensive.   Used
7171s should cost no more than about $2k for the chassis and a 8 or 16 port
board.

Leases should be somewhere in the $300 range, although you should ask your
local IBM office if they can loan you one for a few days. I've had good luck
with that if all you need it for is to install the system.
