Unfortunately I was not there, but I think I know what the second version is about. The concern Martin and others had about the timer patch is that while it saves CPU resources on idle Linux machine, it could be slightly more expensive on very busy systems. The original patch replaced the 'jiffies' global variable by an inline computation of the value of jiffies. The new version introduces the variable again, but increments it with the number of missed ticks before someone looks at it rather than with 1 every 10 mS. From what I can tell this second version is in the 2.4.19 timer patch. Rob
