I can't speak for redhat's directory nameing convention but your right about 
s390 and s390x as far as the Linux architecture is concerned. I suppose that 
nothing binds redhat to use this convention on their site but they have 
always maintained a pretty high level of detail in the past. You might 
consider posting this question to them.
