Subject: patching patch

Can someone suggest the "best" patches against 'patch'
to get it compiled cleanly on zSeries? I know it can be done,
but I'm missing something. Best I've found thus far is from Debian,
but that still doesn't work right. (I consistently get a seek()
error when using the resultant executable.) What did SuSE and RH do?
What did ThinkBlue do? Heck, what did Marist do?
