The configure script cant find the kernel source dir, this happened also
to me, just run the configure script with "./configure
--with-kernel_dir=path_to_kernel_source" (usually /usr/src/linux-2.4),
first make sure that you have the rpm installed, you can check it with
"rpm -qa |grep kernel", you're looking for a kernel-source package, if
dont, install it from the cd of Suse.

With "uname -r" you would see the kernel version, and, normally in
/etc/issue is the version specific to the distribution, so "cat
/etc/issue" will give you the info.
