I believe that starting with SLES8, SuSE finally implemented a real
chkconfig command.  Give that one a try.

Nothing new there.  Just the installation guide and the readme's
and a bunch of the ibm redbooks.

I've been all through those YaST panels - Still no clue as to how
to do basic things like start mysql.

The rpm -ql command showed me that ucdsnmp for example hit these
files in /etc
    etc/init.d/snmpd
    etc/logrotate.d/ucdsnmp
    etc/ucdsnmpd.conf        (which I'd already found and updated).

None of this looks like it gets it started either... HELP!
