We've had SLES8 running for several months. I tried various installs and the one that finally worked for me was ssh/ftp.
As to the VNC install, I can't get it to work with netscape or mozilla on my 8.1 SuSE workstation! Some nonsense about a java plugin missing, so its either ssh or use a microsoft workstation to install linux! I was not able to get the xWindow install to work. I've been playing with the SP2 Beta and it has its problems, too. The only method I could get to work consistently was the the VNC method to a windows browser. Are there alternatives to a browser for VNC. I don't understand why microsoft has to be in the loop at all.
