Thanks Mark. No, I frequently have days lately longing for a good old solid 360/65 and some nice 2314 and 3330 drives. And punch cards. But alas, it's not to be. No the native mode I was referring to was LPAR mode, with the IFL assigned to a LPAR and the OS/390 systems running in the others. But without z/VM since there seems to be some resistance from the applications folks (Lord only know why, if even he does) as to why. They asked about LINUX in the LPAR without z/VM. Apparently either way, Oracle has not certified most or all of their stuff to run in the z/800, in either mode. Or so they told the application folks. Let's not get the systems people in to ask some hard questions. Sigh...... But thanks again for the input, every piece of knowledge helps....

Doug,
Others have responded to your real question, but I wanted to warn you about a possible confusion of terminologies. You use the term "native" to indicate what most of the literature and discussions call "LPAR mode." Usually, "native" indicates that the entire machine is not in LPAR mode, and only one copy of an operating system is running, utilizing the resources of the whole machine. I bring this up because there have been a number of references to both modes in the past, and wanted you to be aware. Also, to be even more pedantic (sorry, I can't always stop myself), IBM has stated that they no longer test their updates to Linux/390 in native mode. They only test in LPAR mode, and using z/VM. While they don't think they've done anything to stop Linux/390 from running natively, they're also not 100% sure it will work.

One of my application managers wants to know if LINUX can run native on a z800 LINUX engine, or do we have to run zVM? I assume one of the advantages to running zVM would be to create a development environment for them parallel to the Oracle application. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks./
