It depends on your setup. I had a hard time going from SLES7 to SLES8.

1. I was using SMB from a Win/95 machine to install SLES7. SLES8
requires Win/98 or above to use SMB for installs.

2. The old copy of PUTTY used port 23 for installation. SLES8 has a
new PUTTY which also seams to require port 22 (SSL).

3. The new installation procedure, for me, required VNCVIEWER which is
on the install CD. New procedure, new software, no new documentation on
what you are doing. Once you do it, it is obvious. Also, means you can
install via a Web interface.

4. Yast isn't installed at the same point as under SLES7. Your system
is fully installed before you can go into Yast. The install with VNC
is...different. Same basic questions, different order, different
options.

5. SLES7 had preconfigured different sizes. SLES8 has one set of
software which you can select more or less.

6. I IPL the installation from the reader. Remember to punch the new
IPL decks. (I know...really stupid)

7. This whole SSL security thing. If you haven't been using it
before, then there is a learning curve. Like using a SSL FTP. When I
ftp from CMS to Linux, SSL is rather a hassel. (I want to do what I
want to do...dammit! <G>)

8. SLES8 wants...likes a journaling file system. I've upgraded from
ext2 to ext3. I still see too many patches for the other journaling
filesystems for my taste.

9. The online update function is neat. However, it has been bogged
down due to the new Service Pack 2 that came out a few weeks ago. But
it can cause problems as if you update a system one week, when you
update another system a few weeks later, you may have different fixes.
Not good when you are trying to keep test and production systems at the
same service level.

10. Most of the documentation, Redbooks, are geared to SLES7 (when they
are talking about Suse Linux).

Subject: z/VM and SLES X

Hello all,

does anyone have an installation checklist and / or caveats
do's dont's on installing a SuSE SLES X under z/VM?. The intended use
for the Linux solution is to host a Web server(s).

Regards,

J. Cassidy
