Near as I can tell, SLES8 does not contain an mdisk= kernel parameter, or
the mdisk driver.  What SLES8 does have is the DIAG and FBA drivers that can
use VDISK.  If you are running in 64-bit mode, the DIAG driver won't work
unless you patch it (see below), but the FBA drivers works just fine.

You should head over to http://www.sinenomine.net/downloads/ and grab the
SWAPGEN EXEC.  It is THE easiest way to create and initialize swap disks.
You don't even have to do the mkswap after booting.  Instructions for its
use are in the EXEC.

As far as the DIAG driver goes, you can get a patch over at
http://www.homerow.net/projects/zlinux/64bit-diag.htm to make it work.
