There is a comedy show in the UK - "'Allo, 'allo" in which one character plays a French
policeman who makes the most appalling gaffes using mispronunciation.  I know a couple 
of
Englishmen who believe they can speak German and make exactly the same mistakes with u 
for |.
I don't think the Rechtschreibreform got rid of _ completely - it certainly cleaned up 
some
odd uses.  I'm glad to see some of the silliness (Ristorant?) got thrown out.
