Its not a US thing. Everyone backdoors stuff when they can force it to be done. One of the really *big* problems I have with current Wassenaar based export policy (ie US, UK, AU, NZ, etc) is that because we make it hard for people to export crypto chips (without our holes in them ;)) we all use cheap foreign crypto chips (with their holes in them...) There are reasons US government secure stuff gets delivered encrypted, signed and in tamperproof packaging 8)
