Its about fear not probability. If the news spent half its time showing lightning strike deaths and talking about them then you'd have a major market in strikeproof cars, earthing boots, umbrellas with lightning conductors. And humans really are bad at evaluating risk. The idea that the most risky thing many 50+ adult males do is go out and shovel snow off the drive in the winter is simply not intuitive.
