All I wanted was a simple means to access and/or update files within a Linux partition (originally) from z/VM and (now) z/OS. I didn't intend to hook into the USS (Unix System Services) VFS services or anything like that. Just plain old "command-line" (or Rexx) access to EXT2 and EXT3 filesystems.
