Hmm - I am working with a customer who is looking to create server
instances on the fly based on some off platform criteria. Is there a good
Programmable interface to this stuff? Would it be worth the money? Would
I be better off just using REXX execs and service machines?

We have had Levanta Rel. 1 in on a trial. It's pretty impressive, although
it had a few shortcomings, especially in the user interface. It would have
been good for a few dozen small servers, but I wouldn't have wanted to use
it for hundreds of servers or large Oracle databases.

We're getting Levanta Rel. 2 in for a trial this month. It's supposedly a
complete rewrite of the product and is reported to address many of our
concerns with Rel. 1. I'll let you know after I've had a bit of time to
play with it.

My management's biggest concern is the cost of the product. It's more
expensive than z/VM itself. It's really going to have to justify itself in
terms of saved labor costs. There is a lot of labor involved in setting up
Levanta to manage Linux servers, but that labor is supposedly recovered in
spades in the ease of creating new servers and applying service. We shall
see.
