Correct. You could also IPL from VM virtual reader devices or from a
shared dasd device when using the VM load parameter patch. Note that
the your IPL disk needs to have the kernel on it but not necessarily
the root file system.

Of course, none of this works on LPAR installations and VM always
needs DASD devices to run on itself.
