My company uses Jabber as our corporate instant messaging tool. The servers run off Intel boxes, but that was because of the nature of the group that implemented it. I didn't learn about it until it was too late to influence the decision towards Linux/390.
There were some changes made to the server and client to make sure things were encrypted, and to change the handshake between the client and the server. The latter bit allowed the group supporting things to make sure that they would only be supporting the clients that they distributed to the field. That will help keep their support costs down, or at least we hope that is the case. The changes were done by the Jabber folks, with whom we contracted for the software and associated modifications. I would like to hear from those using Jabber for serious non-chat applications. I doubt you'll find a binary for it. You can get a source RPM here: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.0/suse/src/gaim-0.67-55.src.rpm and build it from that, perhaps. One thing to keep in mind, is that this is an X-based application, which means you'll be burning a lot of CPU, just to drive the interface. Now, if you want to run an Instant Messaging _server_, that's a whole 'nother ball game. Gaim is only a client, not a server. I've played with the Jabber server from jabber.org, and that has some nice features, which have already been mentioned.
