It depends on how much you want to play<G>.

I just got a Thinkpad G40. I used Partition Magic to reduce the size
of the XP partition and then loaded Suse 9.0 on it.

It works. I didn't get much futher then that. But.....

Unlike my previous Thinkpad 770x, which had certain things done via
hardware, the G40 doesn't.

For example, the G40 uses software in your running operating system to
tell you your battery life. Or at least it seems to. But the big deal
is with Linux, my laptop overheats. On the XP side, there is a power
management application that starts kicking the fan in high gear when the
lalptop gets warmer. If that doesn't do it, I believe it slows down the
Intel processor.

When I boot Linux, I got about 20 minutes before the G40 overheats. It
shuts down and you have to wait until it cools off, disconnect the power
and take out the battery, put everything back and you then can power up
again.

Now I assume that there is power management tools available. Perhaps
not. I don't recall if the IBM web site said that the G40 had Linux as
a supported OS. If it is, then the tools are available from IBM. If
not, maybe all functions of the G40 are not supported.

The bad part is, if not all funtions are supported by IBM, then tend
not to say that Linux is supported on that hardware. Even if it is
something you weren't planning on using.

I still have a couple weeks to send it back....just got to get the time
to try the things necessary to make a decision.

I hope this doesn't upset anybody. But I am considering getting a
Laptop. Of
course, I am only interested in one running Linux/Intel. But most
vendors
are "suggesting" Windows XP. I've only found a couple of Linux laptop
vendors (ASA Computers and EmperorLinux). And their prices are in the
"premium" range. It almost looks like it would be less expensive to buy
a
"normal" laptop and just install Linux myself.

Any suggestions? It might be nice to keep the list clean by replying
directly to me at mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks.
