Things like network card (wireless even more) , winmodem (needs to be
disabled for modem connection), USB devices, CDROM can delay installation.
If you are prepared to run Linux as a guest under Windows, VMWare ($$)
bridges the LAN between Windows and Linux.

        www.linuxlaptops.org.

You'll probably be better off doing it yourself. Make sure the
hardware is supported under linux (stay away from centrino chipsets
until the drivers are out and tested). Have heard good things about
Linux on Dell laptops, some but less about HP's. Probably no chance of
getting any builtin modems working, but most other things will work if
you do your research beforehand.

I have an ancient, pentium 200 laptop compaq armada. When I first
put
linux on it, it was a real b*tch. Recently RH9, though went in with no
problems. No modem and I have never gotten sound to work. Everything
else works, including usb(1) for my camera, though this is waay to slow
(and more importantly, memory constrained) for doing much under X have
used it for years in terminal mode for editing/telnet/ssh etc. (Sigh,
I'm now just learning to love the eclipse IDE, sow when I find work
I'll be looking for a new laptop too).
