Hi Phil!

On eckd dasd you can use all blocksizes, all are supported: 512, 1024,
2048, 4096.
Be aware that the filesystem you create [with mke2fs and friends] needs
to have at least the blocksize of your dasd: bigger is possible but
inefficient, smaller
does not work properly
=> always choose the same size for both dasd and filesystem, ext2/3 and
reiser support
all blocksizes available.
Smaller block size lets you store tons of small files very efficiently, on
the other
hand Linux will produce more IO programs to transfer the same amount of
data
which decreases performance in IO, CP, and Linux. This leads to the
general
recommendation to use 4096 block size because it provides best efficiency
and
performance with a typical (average) file size greater then 2048.

with kind regards
Carsten Otte

To All,

According to sources from the Boeblingen lab, 1k blocksizes have been
succesfully tested on SLES8 SP2 (at minimum) and are save to use in
production.
