The VNC session flows over ports starting 5900, you're right.  If you have
your own VNC client, these are the ports you connect to.

These servers also provide matching ports starting at 5800, that you
connect to using a web browser.  It downloads a Java app that runs as the
VNC client.  If you don't have a VNC client installed, you use your
browser to connect this way.
