No mainframe specific caveats to LVM. A general one is "don't put your root file system on LVM."
Lots of books and papers on Linux/390 cloning. They all pretty much involve z/VM, or the use of the various "snapshot" technologies built into storage arrays. There have been some presentations given recently that talk about disaster recovery for Linux/390, but I don't know of any that are on the web. No, you cannot mount a Linux/390 file system on USS (yet). The VTOC and volume label were put there primarily to get z/OS systems to quite whining about an invalid DASD volume, and to allow people who have the luxury of shutting down their Linux/390 systems to vary the volumes online to z/OS and do full-volume backups. Abresch Jr. - at Pepco Sent: Friday, May 07, 2004 9:36 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Some Linux DASD Questions We are running SuSE Linux SLES8 SP03 in a native LPAR using IBM?s ESS 2105 Shark DASD. We are currently formatting our Linux DASD using the Compatible Disk Layout (CDL) format and the ReiserFS file system. We are z/OS System Programmers and are still new to Linux. We have two applications that are ready to be moved into production and are interested in building our production Linux LPAR. At the recommendation of our Unix Folks, it was recommended that we use Logical Volume Manager (LVM) for our file systems. I have downloaded SuSE?s LVM White Paper from http://www.suse.com/en/business/products/server/sles/whitepapers/LVM.pdf and will read from front to back. However, as we approach production status, I have the following questions: Are there any specific S390 concerns or caveats with LVM? Are there any papers or docs for the best method of setting up a Linux system that allows easy Linux system cloning for quick creation of a new Linux server on S390? We use Sungard for z/OS contingency testing. Are there any papers or docs that describe methods of Linux contingency testing for S390 Linux? Since we use CDL format DASD which creates a VTOC with files such as LINUX.VLNX001.PART0000.NATIVE, could I mount this under z/OS Unix System Services and access it? As always, thanks in advance.
