Some software vendors will charge you for a processor your z/os operating
system CANNOT use? That makes about as much sense as charging me for a
coupling facility engine.

Just one word of warning. A pretty small number of software suppliers
didn't go along with this pricing strategy, and will still charge you for
the additional capacity an IFL provides. Make sure you talk to _all_ your
suppliers before you actually get one installed, just so there are no
surprises.

Note that z/OS not only will not boot on an IFL, but it does not see IFL
processors when counting the number of CPs in a system. This means that
they don't count for software support cost. This is very important to us
(rather, it will be if we ever get an IFL to run Linux).

To be more specific, the IFL has a hardware/microcode difference which
prevents operating systems other than z/VM V4/V5 or Linux from booting on
it. This means, z/OS, VSE/ESA, TPF, z/VM V3 and their predecessors (not
just
MVS). This also applies to these operating systems as guests of z/VM V4/V5.
