This is not happening an a zSeries box, but on an IBM Thinkpad R40e (2684-H4U) which I am booting with SuSE 9.1 "LiveCD". The ethernet does not work because LiveCD decides to use the wrong driver (tg3 vs. BCM5700). When I do an "lsmod", it shows the tg3 moduled loaded with a use count of 1, but no users. (what?). When I do a ps -Af, I see "/sbin/modprobe -s tg3" in the process list. Why?
If this is too far off topic, I apologize. But I'm wondering, in general, why would modprobe "freeze" instead of reporting an error? And how can a module have a non-zero use count, but no users? Is it because the modprobe has not terminated?
