I can't answer the modprobe question per se. I know that if the kernel module being loaded is having problems, it can cause all sorts of disruption. The tg3 driver should work quite well with that Ethernet device, however.
I don't have certain knowledge, but I believe that for any kernel module that is being used directly by the kernel, and not by another module, "lsmod" does not report a value for "Used by."
