Well, SuSE 9.1 on Intel now defaults to UTF-8, so the 390 version
probably isn't too far behind.

Marcy, check to see if you have the gcc_locales and system locales
packages loaded (don't have access right now to a system to check exact
name). One of the locales should be UTF-8 for SLES8 (I think it's called
"unicode-8", but don't quote me.) Once that's loaded, you should be able
to use YaST to set the system default to unicode-8, and their problem
should go away.
