Different animal entirely.  What you want to test is whether the remote
system can connect back to the X server running on your PC -- remember,
for X, server and client are backwards from what you expect.

Start the X server on your workstation. Connect with putty to the remote
Linux system, log in, set your DISPLAY variable to point back to your
workstation (the machine running the X server) and type 'xterm &'. If
you see a terminal window appear, then it's not the X server
configuration, but something in xdm.
