I have nothing against dfdss, in and of itself. It's the ability to use it
with finesse that I am less clear on. I can do things with sledgehammer
granularity at the moment (full volume, regardless of what is on it) - It
hadn't occurred to me to grab the tracks of each mini-disk, again, because
we are VM neophytes here.
I prefer to use dfdss because I can then use RMM to manage the tapes in the
offsite and onsite 3494 library that is already defined and works well in
z/OS. No re-inventing the wheel.
I will have to look at doing what you suggest effectively. I want the
minidisk granularity so that I am not device-image dependant.

What do you have against DFDSS on the z/OS side? You can dump the entire
volume. If you need to restore a mini-disk, then do a restore using the
TRACKS parameter. Of course, this means you need to know the starting
and ending cylinder of each mini-disk. But that is in the VM directory.
