I need to do some quick research as we may be heading very quickly to
disaster mode.

We have a Xerox 4890 laser printer (one of those big things) that is
channel attached. It broke over the weekend and Xerox has been trying
to fix it over the last few days.

Well we have "voter notification notices" that has to be in the mail
tomorrow (Wednesday). Time to start scrambling.

The printer does a forms flash (I think that is the same as a forms
overlay in PC terms).

It's time to consider printing to other departmental printers.

I'm looking to see if Linux can aid us in in printing to these
printers.

We have identified about a dozen departmental printers that we can try
to use. Not all of them may be suitable.

1. A Linux solution that can send down a "forms overlay" and then the
printout (all of these printers are IP attached).

2. A Linux solution that can produce PDF files containing the overlay
(bad for the network), that can be shipped to these printers.

3. Worst case, I might be able to use some sort of mail merge feature
of a PC based word processor to do this. Seems like I did something
simular to this back in the late '80s.

4. Worst, worst case, we will take a sample overlay to Kinkos, and
have them run off a pallet and a half of forms. Then print the variable
information in the proper spots.

So does anyone have any experience in this that is quick to setup?
This is on Suse 8.0.
