Also you could make the backup in tree steps:

1) zVM backup (system packs only): there are the mdisks 123, 124, 125
that are the xxxres, xxxw01, xxxw02, etc, dasds accessed r/o. So, with
the system running you can make a ddr from those MAINT minidisks to tapes.

Also you should not forget to make the spxtape of system spool data
files, this is very important. You need to do this only after the
instalation of the system and when you apply RSU or some system PTFs.

2) Backup of z/VM user data: like users minidisks and users spool files.
Use spxtape (for spool) and DDR (for files and minidisks or dasds) for this.

3) Backup of Linux systems and data: for this you could use any Linux
tools (like tar) or an application program for backup, like TSM (Tivoli
Storage Manager), etc. Or you could do a full backup using DDR of the
Linux dasds or minidisks.

Anybody want to add anything?

I think you are asking how to backup the VM system. Use DDR to back up all
DASD to tape, be sure to do all cylinders (0-END) and you should shutdown
your Linux guests and all non-essential services while backing up to ensure
data integrity.

For example, to backup real device A00:

CP ATTACH A00 * (Or link to fullpack minidisk, can be R/O)
CP ATTACH xxx * 181 (where XXX is a real tape drive)
DDR
SYS CONS
IN A00 DASD SCRATCH
OUT 181 TAPE (COMPACT
DUMP ALL

Repeat for each DASD device you use.

That ought to do it. You should also have a stand alone DDR tape handy in
case you need it.
