I'll add my (unsolicited) encouragement to people who are on the fence, wondering whether they are opening up a big can of worms by volunteering to chair a session. This really isn't a tough job. You get to the meeting room a few minutes early, distribute session eval cards, stand guard over the handouts, and ask the speaker if s/he'll take questions during the presentation. When the official meeting time starts, you do "the spiel": general announcements that are made at the beginning of every Share session, followed by an introduction for the speaker. Then sit back and enjoy the show... you have the best seat in the house. Keep an eye on your watch, and make sure that your speaker finishes on time, collect session evals, and that's about it. (You can experience occasional crises, not often, but it can happen. The speaker may not have brought enough handouts, so you might offer to run over to Headquarters to make additional copies. Once or twice hotel staff has turned off the lights during a session I was chairing, so I had to quickly duck into the service area to find the ballroom light switches. Oh, and once I went upstairs to quiet some furniture movers who were setting up for a division luncheon and disturbing our presentation. Of course, these won't happen to *you*.) Fear not, pony up, and proceed with confidence. There's more to be gained by chairing one of these things than there is to be lost. And it's a good way to help without having to make a long-term commitment. A win for everybody. -- David Andrews A. Duda and Sons, Inc.
