Dave, By 'mainframe version' do you mean linux/390, VM or MVS? Our MVS costs are outrageous, VM is more reasonable and we were hoping linux/390 would be even better. We don't run SAS/GRAPH any more. Mainly just BASE FSP and STAT. Some ACCESS and SHARE. The workloads we are looking at moving really aren't true cpu hogs.

We moved to SAS on LINUX on Intel running Suse 9.0. Runs like a champ, with a Gb connection the SMF downloads quickly. The Intel version was about 75% less expensive than the mainframe version. Since SAS is such a CPU consumer, it doesn't seem like it is a very good candidate for mainframe Linux. It was a pretty painless conversion. Fro our perspective, we do not like being charged more for any software, including SAS when we have to add a processor for workload that is increasing. One of the reasons that SAS is eventually going to have to go away from our shop is that if we get a more powerful box, cost of SAS goes up. We no longer have CA/Mics so there is no compelling reason for us to continue to pay SAS price increases. If SAS on z/Linux was cheaper to run, or priced like the PC version we would go that and access the data via NFS. Talking to our SAS rep, I get the impression SAS doesn't think there's much of a market for it. -----Original Message----- From: Marcy Cortes [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, September 09, 2004 1:48 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: SAS - Is linux/390 an option? Our company is looking at obtaining servers for a new central SAS environment (replacing aging and scattered older servers). Can SAS run under linux on the mainframe and if so does it perform well? Our local SAS rep says there is no SAS product for linux/390 but I had thought some people are in fact running SAS under linux on the mainframe.
