What SAS really needs to do is a measured usage approach to licensing.
Just because we added an processor doesn't mean that the SAS usage of those
resources went up by that much. IBM has seen that measured usage sells
software to organizations that might otherwise not purchase, or existing
customers, who would otherwise abandon said software. So if SAS wants to
own an eventual market share that equals all of nothing, continue on the
course they are on. If they instead and part of something, and continued
revenue, change the pricing model. This demonstrates that the per engine
model is fatally flawed.

>From the MXG listserv today-
I suggest we let Erik know companies ARE interested in a SAS for linux/390
AND that they come up with a fair pricing scheme (i.e., prices based only
on
the IFL engines where linux/390 runs).

I just spoke to Erik Burgdorf , SAS Marketing Strategy who is trying to get
a feel for the market for SAS in IBM Linux or z/VM. If SAS supports this
environment, that opens MXG support as well. If your shop is interested in
exploring SAS in an IBM Linux environment, please give Erik Burgdorf an
email.

Fro our perspective, we do not like being charged more for any software,
including SAS when we have to add a processor for workload that is
increasing. One of the reasons that SAS is eventually going to have to go
away from our shop is that if we get a more powerful box, cost of SAS goes
up. We no longer have CA/Mics so there is no compelling reason for us to
continue to pay SAS price increases. If SAS on z/Linux was cheaper to
run, or priced like the PC version we would go that and access the data via
NFS.

Thanks!
Talking to our SAS rep, I get the impression SAS doesn't think there's much
of a market for it.

By 'they' do you mean SAS or just your company decided not to do it?

We had it - beta. Worked great. Then they decided not to do it.

Subject: [LINUX-390] SAS - Is linux/390 an option?

Our company is looking at obtaining servers for a new central SAS
environment (replacing aging and scattered older servers).
Can SAS run under linux on the mainframe and if so does it perform well?
Our local SAS rep says there is no SAS product for linux/390 but I had
thought some people are in fact running SAS under linux on the
mainframe.
