You could 'dd' into 'gzip' to save bandwidth,
but that will burn expensive zSeries CPU cycles.

If you can 'tar' the stuff  (with or without the GZip flag
depending on whether you want to save bandwidth or save CPU)
then you'll only get the *content* and not all those unused blocks.
How many filesystems in this volume?   Just one or two?
Make that two 'tar' runs,  each flagged to stay in one FS.

This way,  when you "untar" at the receiving end
you can fit it all into a smaller volume.
