Is there something within linux that you have to do to tell it what you
expect it to do when it gets that signal?

It's a kernel option. Recent SuSE and Debian "Sarge" (don't remember
about "Woody") have the option built in to respect Signal Shutdown.
Don't know about Red Hat or Slackware, etc.
