thanks david. we're running on an mp3000, and the manuals don't mention
anything about IEEE floating point. perhaps that's the problem. it's
running in it's own lpar (we don't have VM here). also, i noticed
yesterday that our 2216 connection is adding 8ms latency on my connection.
all other hardware that i go through is 1ms or less. it doesn't seem like
much to me, but perhaps it's enough to slow things down.
i get what you mean about using command line tools instead of X. i'm just
trying to run X so i can use it to configure my system as a crutch until i
get my arms around linux. i'm very new to linux and have had my face
shoved in manuals for the last three weeks. i'm slowly getting on top of
it, but having gnome temporarily available would definiately speed things
along.

1) Make absolutely certain you are running on a machine with IEEE floating
point support.
2) Make sure you are running in the smallest virtual machine you can get
away with, with plenty of vdisk swap disks.
3) Learn to like/use text mode whenever absolutely possible.
4) Use twm or a Very Simple window manager.
5) Turn off all the special effects in Gnome.
All that gingerbread in Gnome costs mucho cycles, and X does tons and tons
of floating point math. I don't remember what kind of system you have,
but
you may just not have enough horsepower.
