Jim,
You are correct 5.1.1 wil be running 31 bit toleration mode so you can run
the 31 bit app on the 64 bit OS

The technote on installing 5.1.1 on Linux at
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=727&uid=swg21182138
lists s390x (which is 64-bit Linux for zSeries). I would take
this to mean that WAS 5.1.1 is supported on SLES 9 in 64-bit mode
(though I believe the app is still 31-bit).

I have asked for clarification from the WebSphere team here. Note
that we do plan to support WAS as a 64-bit exploiting application
on Linux on zSeries soon.
