Jim, You are correct 5.1.1 wil be running 31 bit toleration mode so you can run the 31 bit app on the 64 bit OS

I would take this to mean that WAS 5.1.1 is supported on SLES 9 in 64-bit mode (though I believe the app is still 31-bit). I have asked for clarification from the WebSphere team here. Note that we do plan to support WAS as a 64-bit exploiting application on Linux on zSeries soon.
