If the disk is unmounted, fdasd -l can be used. If it is mounted, fdasd
throws nasty error messages like

WARNING: Your DASD '/dev/dasda' is in use.
         If you proceed, you can heavily damage your system.
         If possible exit all applications using this disk
         and/or unmount it.

and

writing volume label...
writing VTOC...
rereading partition table...

fdasd error:  IOCTL error
Error while rereading partition table.
Please reboot!
