The /proc file system has a lot of that kind of information, but I can't figure out how it access the information from outside Linux. It looks like SNMP is the best tool. Linux still has to 'wake up' to process the SNMP request.
I wanted to follow control blocks in Linux memory from 'outside' of Linux by using VM commands. It worked on lots of other programs and operating systems. The problem is that the documentation just isn't there. We're not in the mainframe world any more.
