We believe the stock SuSe SLES8 kernel has the linux software support for IEEE disabled. There is a compiler directive CONFIG_MATHEMU that seems to enable this. Obviously this requires a recompilation of the kernel. Not sure if this will invalidate any support agreement you may have.
But since SuSE won't support a G4 *anyway*....this probably is not an issue for you.
