About 6 weeks ago, I looked at Bacula. In the next couple months I will
be getting back to our future tape backup methods.

By the end of Oct, I will know how Oracle 10g running on SLES9 under
z/VM 5.1 works with mainframe tape drives. How does it handle multiple
tape volumes? How does it work with an IBM VTS?

Once I find solutions that handle Oracle 10g and an IBM VTS, (hopefully
there will be at least one solution that meets this criteria),
everything else should fall into place. (I'm dreaming)

Even if VM could make FCP attached storage look like FBA devices to VSE
(everything would be supported which would be great). I kind of doupt
that the cost of converting all VSE systems from CKD to FBA would be
worth the savings of the $25K Ficon adapter saved. All the JCL changes
and resulting problems, would push me to just pay for the second
adapter. Much less the conversion time.

I think "that level of either VSE or z/VM": if you have z/VM 5.1, you
could present FCP devices to VSE as FBA, and it should Just Work.

How do you feel about Bacula? It can now write to ANSI or Standard
Label tapes. It does file-level Linux backups.

We've got some automation to let it talk to your (VM-driven) ATL, and
there's work in progress to make Bacula able to really understand
storage migration pools. Contact me or David off-list if you're
interested in exploring this.
