Yep, ficon is sharable. But we need more input on the emulated SCSI stuff.
FICON attaches to mainframe DASD and Tape. FCP attaches to SCSI attached DASD and TAPE. Never the twain shall meet. The fun part is now that everything emulates everything else.... The IBM DS6800 is scsi drives (just like all the raid drives the mainframe has had for the last 15 years). If you partition it to be mainframe drives, then it emulates 3380/3390s and you connect via FICON. If you keep it as scsi (no emulation), then you connect via FCP adapters. And "partitioning" means you can have both, and then need both kinds of adapters. Then you divide up how much disk is assigned to each partition. Same with IBM 3590 tape. The controller is FICON or FCP attached. No partitioning. A controller is either all FICON or all FCP. And the drives are dedicated to a controller. You can mix and match, but you can't share drives between controllers. So you end up with a dedicate set of FICON attached tape drives and a dedicated set of FCP attached tape drives. Never as simple as it looks. My question is this: Are these adapters (and ports) sharable between LPARs? Once in VM they should be sharable between guests, correct? We plan on moving DASD and native tape to emulated SCSI in Linux. Pretty simple question eh... If someone can shoot me links to any related doc's out of IBM I'd really appreciate it.
