SNMP is just the transport. It's almost as broad a statement as that it can do IP. To many people monitoring is not more than check that the server is still up or maybe that the process is still running or the disk has not filled up. There's a lot of variables in an net-snmp node that you can retrieve and it's easy to measure it to death by doing so. The challenge here is to understand when to retrieve what metrics so that you capture enough detail with sufficient resolution, and still not generate workload yourself by doing so.
