Yes, 3590 tapes have a thumbwheel just as 3490 tapes (actually both are
extremely similar).
But that's not the case. I made sure the tape was NOT write-protected and
indeed I did tape write tests such as:

- tar a file into the tape drive (success)
- db2 export a table into the tape drive (success)

It was only the DB2 backup which failed as I mentioned.

Do 3590 cartridges have a rotating switch on them, to write-protect them,
like 3490 cartridges do? If so, is it in the write-protected state? On a
3490 this is a thumbwheel device with one flat side that has a picture of a
lock on it, when the lock is showing you can't write to it.

3590 drive problem

Hi list,

We have a problem using tapes 3590 (/dev/rtibm0) for DB2 backup purposes.
These are the symptoms:

- We can use the 3590 tape drives correctly. That means we can tar -cvf any
file/s.
- We can get into DB2 (user db2inst1) and EXPORT individual tables into 3590
tape drives perfectly.
- What CANNOT DO is to DB2 BACKUP a database into a 3590 tape drive due to
the following error:

> db2 backup db lnxr89 to /dev/rtibm0
SQL2031W Warning! Please mount the target or source media on device
"/dev/rtibm0".
Do you want to continue(c), terminate this device only(d), abort the
utility(t) ? (c/d/t)
c
SQL2059W A device full warning was encountered on device "/dev/rtibm0".

I enclose file DB2DIAG.LOG just in case that anyone can interpret it. It's
not an end-of-tape condition (tape is rewound). I simply can't imagine what
it is. I know what it is NOT:

- It is not a matter of permissions.
- It is not a tape-protected condition.
- It is not an end-of-tape condition.
- It is not a DB2-not-recognizing-3590-tape-drive condition.

Help, please !! :-)
